The Sony KDL52Z5500 TV includes Sony’s highly respected Bravia engine. This further enhances screen images and also reduces noise. The Advanced Contrast Enhancer adjusts the backlight according to the scene, resulting in much blacker blacks and a quicker reaction to fast moving pictures. Picture calibration is very straightforward, thanks to an easy to use set-up system.
The picture on the KDL52Z5500 has a deep natural feel with rich colours. The blacks are really dark. Sometimes dark scenes can seem a little too dark but this rarely detracts from the overall quality. Freeview pictures look particularly good, thanks to the balance of sharp detail and natural overall softness. The Sony Motionflow software smooths out any jerky motions on screen.
The KDL52Z5500 features a Sony widget technology called AppliCast. AppliCast connects to the Internet via an Ethernet port to display news, weather, share prices, celebrity gossip and much more. The information can be displayed overlaid on to the current TV programme you are watching.The internet connection also enables the TV to download location maps to show you where any downloaded photos were taken
Sound quality is always rather poor in a flat screen TV. However it is much better in the KDL52Z5500 than most of its rivals. The audio is well balanced, with lots of detail and energy that more than makes up for a slight hiss with certain speech sounds. Any problems are overcome with the addition of external speakers or a surround sound system.
There is a USB port and Scart sockets on the KDL52Z5500. The HDMI socket all support Bravia sync, which allows control of connected equipment, together with their on screen menus with just one remote.
Usability on the KDL52Z5500 is reasonable. The on screen menu and EPG (electronic programme guide) are easily navigated although the remote control is a bit complicated to get used to at first.
